Spring means exercising outdoors and getting our bodies in shape for summer.

Any other winter haters out there? Well, isn’t it nice to know that spring is technically just four weeks away – YEAH! And, I can’t wait. It’s the time of year when all of nature comes to life. It’s also when people start thinking about getting their bodies in shape for summer.

It’s so hard not to gain a few pounds in the winter because I’m not as active. To get a head start on spring, three weeks ago I changed my workout routine, cut back on dining out, and reduced my calories to lose those five pounds that were still hanging around since the holidays. Yes, the holidays!

I really enjoy when the weather turns because I love walking outdoors (minus the allergies). Since there is no excuse for not working out, I have to rely upon my boring treadmill in the winter on cardio days. Exercising outside just makes working out more fun.

So, tell me how have you kept the weight off during the winter and how is your exercise routine going to change once spring arrives?

Many people are reporting detox-type diets that focus on eliminating certain foods to reduce inflammation and disease are successful. Detox diets also eliminate additives, preservatives, hormones, and other artificial ingredients because these things are making us sick.

Detox-type or purification diets are on the rise. These diets eliminate foods, like dairy, gluten, meat, and some fruits, and anything else that is carb, sugar, or fat-laden with the intent of reducing disease and inflammation. They also restrict foods that have additives, preservatives, hormones, and other artificial ingredients because these things are making us sick. All promote lots of veggies and water, some broths and smoothies, others raw foods and organics. All focus on creating a diet that brings optimal health and healing.

Lots of these programs advocate a very strict purging period of at least seven days, then gradually reintroduce certain foods to determine your “triggers.” I remember a guy who suffered from arthritis to the point of where it was very visible in his hands and he was also in a lot of pain. He went to a holistic doctor who practiced alternative medicine. The doctor stripped almost everything from his diet. Within weeks, he felt better and starting losing a lot of weight. He gradually began eating certain foods again, and gradually the arthritis started returning.

A friend recently told me about her brother who has diabetes. His chiropractor put him on a detox-type program and he has not only lost weight, but also his glucose levels have dropped significantly.

What we eat has a direct correlation to our health. Studies have proven that the old saying, “Garbage in, garbage out” is true. What do you think about these detox and elimination diets?

How to set goals for life versus New Year's resolutions that don't last.

Instead of using the word “resolutions” because many New Year’s resolutions don’t last, I prefer to call them life goals. Most people start the new year with very well-meaning intentions, but I’m not sure if they’ve really thought through their resolutions.

Have you developed an action plan to help you achieve your goal? You know that saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is very true. What concrete, measurable steps have you taken to ensure you consistently work towards your goal this year? Have you written down your goal and the action plan? What accountability methods are in place to keep you on the mark?

While many might think it’s too late to set New Year’s resolutions, it’s never too late to set life goals.

As the year winds down (hard to believe 2010 is almost over), I’m taking a look at the goals that I set for myself and how many I accomplished versus those that I need to carry-over to 2011 or perhaps reassess. We always focus on the few things we didn’t do and forget about the numerous things did do. While I can’t check everything off my list, it was a fruitful year.

If I had to summarize the year with one statement, it would be “Life is full of seasons, some with peaks and some with valleys. Enjoy the peaks and grow from the valleys. Every valley has its reason, determine the why, get the lesson, and move on. Each valley only makes you stronger for the next and helps you truly appreciate the peaks when they come.”

What is it that you want to finally accomplish or at least get started in 2011? Losing weight? A career change? Getting that Masters? Nothing is impossible. You are only limited by your own fears – fear of change, fear of hard work, and even the fear of success.

Count down to Christmas continues and just to deviate a little from the holiday spirit, someone recently asked about one of those weight loss drugs, Phentermine. Well, you know I’m totally against weight loss drugs because they all come with a host of side effects and cannot be taken for extended periods. This one in particular has a max of three months.

Meanwhile, what about your diet and exercise habits? While the FAQs suggest that the drug is not to be used as a replacement for proper diet and exercise, most people make little to no changes and rely solely on the drug for weight loss. And, if you do make changes, then why take the drug? Just to speed up the results?

Despite the success of some, what happens when you stop taking weight loss drugs? You eventually gain the weight back. Then what? Start taking them again? The emotional roller coaster is very depressing. None of us blew up overnight, yet we want a quick fix. Our society has programmed us to believe there is a pill for everything. And, there practically is. However, only a lifestyle change will provide safe, sustainable weight loss results.

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas, decorations are popping up everywhere and the malls are packed. Office parties have started and my calendar is filling with family and friend gatherings. While I love to eat, I also have to be careful, because it’s easy for me to pack on about five extra pounds between now and New Year’s. It’s not just all the food everywhere, but the added stress of doing more and having less time to fix meals and workout. However, I can’t use time as an excuse. So, no matter what, I stick to my regular routine of fixing healthy meals and taking my lunch, as well as getting in my workouts. I recently read that it takes about two extra hours in the gym to work off the average holiday party meal. I can’t allow the temporary madness of the season to get me off track or use it as an excuse to eat everything I see. I’m eating with discretion and only those things that are really special in small portions. And, to ward off the extra pounds, I also have to work out a little more. One month of splurging is not worth the three months it takes to get it off.

Remember that Christmas song, “Peace on earth, good will toward all men?” Not sure about you, but don’t the holidays seem to be anything but peaceful? All the shopping, decorating, entertaining, relatives and especially overspending! Now, if you really enjoy doing all that, have fun. But, if you don’t, why do it, then complain about it? Why feel like you have to if you don’t want to? Because that’s what you’ve always done or because everyone else is doing it? Why do you feel obligated to get gifts and get upset if people don’t reciprocate? What about those who don’t really appreciate your gift? There is nothing wrong with tradition and I don’t mean to down the holidays, but just challenging you to think about what you are doing and, more importantly why. I stopped getting into the “holiday spirit” years ago because it’s just too stressful and doesn’t focus on the true meaning of Christmas. It is one of the most liberating things I’ve ever done and now I truly have peace.

Well, it’s Thanksgiving again. Time to feast, get-down, get your grub on, whatever you call it. It’s food time! While most people look forward to the gorging, many of us dread it because we have issues with food and tend to overeat. Some might say that’s the main point of Thanksgiving – to eat. Perhaps, but there is more. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and count your blessings. It’s a time to share, to love, and to be grateful. So many do not have what so many of us do have – clean cloths, shelter, warm water, soap, a bed, shoes, family, friends… and yes, food! So, as you feast this year, consider how truly blessed you are and remember those who are not as fortunate. Hey, but by grace, it could be you! And, enjoy your turkey.
